  • Reading and Notes: We'll finish reading and discussing Ch. 8 and 9 of Lord of the Flies

  • Notebook Response: You'll choose one action a character takes in the reading today and write a one paragraph response in your notebook in which you analyze the motivations for that character's behavior by applying psychoanalytic theory. We'll discuss these responses.

    • We'll begin viewing and discussing the film The Princess Bride, applying psychoanalytic criticism as we do.
    • You'll turn in your Notebook for a Notebook Check.


    Wednesday, November 15th


    • Reading and Notes: We'll finish reading and discussing Ch. 7 of Lord of the Flies
    • You'll take the Ch. 7 Reading Quiz. 
    • Writing Focus Lesson: You'll log into your computer and pull up your essay. Together, we'll create Works Cited Pages and MLA formatted Works Cited entries for each of your sources. This is a requirement for your final draft. 
    • I'll pass back your graded essays, then you'll have WORK TIME to begin revision.

    Tuesday, November 14th


    • Reading and Notes: We'll begin reading and discussing Ch. 7 of Lord of the Flies: "Shadows and Tall Trees."
    • Notes: I'll introduce the concept of literary theory as we can use it for literary analysis. We'll study the following schools of literary theory in the coming weeks in this class:
      • Psychoanalytic
      • Archetypal
      • Feminist
    • Notes: We'll delve into the basics of psychoanalytic literary theory. 
    • Finally, you'll have WORK TIME for the following:
      • Ch. 6-7 Vocabulary Pages (Due Today)
      • Notebook Response: For each of the three following elements of the psyche, list one character from Lord of the Flies who could symbolize that part of the psyche. Provide 1-2 sentences explaining why each symbolizes that part of the psyche.

    • Reading and Notes: We'll continue reading and discussing Ch. 5 of Lord of the Flies. We left off yesterday at the bottom of page 80.
    • Notes: We'll go over how to cite quotations in your papers, using quotation marks, lead-ins, and parenthetical citations. Then we'll all work together to set up formatting and works cited pages for your papers. 
    • WORK TIME:
      • You'll work on researching for and writing your essay. (Due Monday, 11/13)
      • Blitz Conferences: I'll check in for two-three minute conferences with each of you, at which time you'll share your selected topic and sources. If needed, I'll make some suggestions to help you along.

    • Notebook Response: You'll begin by crafting a 1/2 to 1 page notebook response in which you answer the following question and give examples to support your answer:
      • In the film Life is Beautiful, how does Guido use creativity and humor to protect his son, his wife, and himself from the Nazis?
      • We'll discuss your answers.
    • Reading and Notes: We'll read and discuss the first few pages of Ch. 5 together.
    • Finally, I'll introduce your first major essay topic: Describe a person who acted with moral courage. What can be learned from his or her actions and how do the lessons relate to you?
      • You'll complete and turn in a Pre-Writing Reflection Sheet.
      • We'll go over the specific guidelines for the paper.
    • You'll have WORK TIME for the following:
      • Vocabulary Page: Ch. 5 (Due Today)
      • Work on your Moral Courage paper.

    • Notes: We'll go over what's required for writing a summary. 
    • You'll take the Ch. 3-4 Reading Quiz. Hint: A mirage is an optical illusion caused by atmospheric conditions. They often appear at midday, when the temperature is the hottest. 
    • We'll continue viewing and discussing the film Life is Beautiful, looking for differences and similarities to Lord of the Flies
    • Finally, you'll have about 30 minutes of WORK TIME for the following:
      • Visit ushmm.org and select one page to read about under the "Rescue and Resistance" heading. After you've read the webpage, write a one paragraph summary in your class notebook. (Remember to date and label it for full credit!)
      • Finally, work on the Vocabulary Page for Ch. 5. (Due Monday)

    • Then you'll visit the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum's website and locate the "Rescue and Resistance" section of the site. You'll choose at least three of the six listed pages and read them carefully. 
    • Response: Finally, you'll write a one paragraph summary of what you read about in your notebook.
