Here's our plan for this spooky Tuesday:
  • Response: You'll write a well-organized, one page response in your notebook that addresses the following prompt.
    • Do people tend to hide behind masks? Why? Can masks, costumes, or uniforms affect peoples' behavior? 
  • Finally, you'll have WORK TIME for the following:
    • Read Ch. 4 of Lord of the Flies to the line "The mask compelled them" on page 64. You may read this on your own or aloud with a partner. 
    • Catch up time! Check your grade with me and complete any missing work!

  • Notes and Reading: We'll read and discuss Ch. 3 and begin Ch. 4 of Lord of the Flies.
  • Then you'll have WORK TIME for the following:
    • Finish Parts of Speech Worksheet from last week once you get #s 6-15 checked by me. (Due Today)
    • Finish and turn in Ch. 3 and Ch. 4 Vocabulary (Due Today)

  • Reading and Notes: We'll begin reading and discussing Ch. 3 of Lord of the Flies.
  • Notes: We'll go over the different parts of speech and their functions in a sentence. 
  • Grammar Worksheet: Parts of Speech in Literary Context
    • We'll do #s 1-5 together
    • You'll do #s 6-15 with a partner
  • Finally, you'll have WORK TIME for the following: 
    • Get #s 6-15 checked by me so you can complete the rest of the sheet on your own or go back to make corrections with your partner. (Due Today)
    • Turn in Class Notebooks (Due Today)
    • Vocabulary Ch. 3 (Due Monday)

Remember to have your parents or guardians schedule Parent/Teacher/Student conferences for this Wednesday and Thursday. No school for you on Thursday and Friday!

  • Reading and Notes: We'll begin by reading and discussing Shirley Jackson's short story, "The Lottery." We'll discuss possible themes and symbolism in the story, and you'll take notes. 
  • Review: We'll briefly review Bloom's Taxonomy. (You took notes on this yesterday.)
  • Finally, you'll have WORK TIME for the following:
    • Chapter 2 Vocabulary Page Due Today
    • Write in Notebook:
      • A one-sentence argument on the theme of "The Lottery"
      • 3 varied-level questions about the story, using your understanding of Bloom's Taxonomy

  • Finally, you'll have WORK TIME for the following:
    • Finish and turn in Ch. 1 Vocabulary
    • Notebook Response to "A Class Divided" -- Connect it to your experiences or something you've seen or heard about in our society today.

  • We'll begin viewing and discussing the Frontline NBC documentary "A Class Divided."
  • WORK TIME: We'll end class with work time for you to do the following:
    • Frontline Response Question (1/2 page in Notebook)
    • Vocabulary Chapter One (Due Tomorrow)

  • We'll check out copies of Lord of the Flies from the library.
  • You'll turn in your signed syllabus. 
  • You'll share what your groups came up with yesterday for the activity, including priorities, rules, consequences for not following rules, and how the rules would be enforced. We'll discuss as a class.
  • Notes: You'll take notes on Abraham Maslow's hierarchy of human needs and make connections to the priorities and systems of government you established in your groups yesterday. 
  • Reading and Notes: We'll begin reading and discussing Chapter One, taking character notes as we read. 
  • WORK TIME: Finally, I'll distribute your vocabulary packets for this unit, and you'll work on completing Chapters One and Two vocabulary, which will be due in class this Friday, 10/20.
